Excavation of Little Doward, Iron Age Hillfort

We may be waiting for some things to happen at Eaton Camp, but for those of you who’ve caught the archaeology bug, you can get some experience excavating at Little Doward.  Chris Atkinson will be there to instruct you and to help.

From Chris Atkinson …

I would like to invite you to become involved with the excavation of Little Doward, Iron Age Hillfort. The excavation is to be carried out from the 3rd May to the 22nd May.

Work will be carried out within a single trench, 25 metres long by 3 metres wide.  The aim of the investigation is to test the possibility of an earlier rampart within the hillfort interior as well as to identify any structures such as round houses, storage pits etc.  It could be a pretty exciting one.

Little Doward Hillfort is located at Symonds Yat West at Grid SO 54000 159. Parking can be found in a lay-by off the A40 (Ganarew) at Grid SO 53380 16330. I apologise for the short notice given, but then I’ve only learnt about it myself!

If you are interested please book through the Site Director Dr Neil Rimmington.

Kind Regards,

supported by the Heritage Lottery Fund
