Day 5 of our excavation continued our efforts to remove all the “industrial type fill” in the ditch in Trench 1. The amount of ash, rock, and baked clay is amazing. By the end of the day we’d gotten to what we think is the bottom, and the steepness of the ditch sides is now clear. Looking at it you realise what a tremendous physical effort was required to make the ditch. But the reasons for its construction, who made it, and when, are still not clear. Today’s most notable find was a small tooth, we don’t know what it came from yet.
